June 2020: Bake It, a hypercasual baking game developed by Kwalee, has accumulated more than 10 million downloads across the App Store and Google Play in just over a month.

A deliciously creative baking game in which players are tasked with matching their bakes to the orders of demanding customers in the aim of becoming a ‘star baker’, Bake It launched globally on 28th April and is Kwalee’s first game to be published with the entire team working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The release itself was timed perfectly, as millions have reached for a mixing bowl to curb lockdown boredom, with Google searches including the term ‘baking’ 170% higher than at the same time last year. Bake It replicates the experience digitally by having players shape, ice and decorate amazing cakes and other sweet treats, so they can hone their skills even when not in a physical kitchen.

Already an ambitious title built within a short timeframe, Kwalee’s development team overcame many technical challenges to successfully release and scale the game under unfamiliar circumstances, using platforms such as Discord to keep in touch and to replicate their studio environment as much as possible.

Bake It has proven to be the icing on the cake for Kwalee’s signature ‘Creative Wednesdays’, which provide a weekly opportunity for Kwalee employees across all roles and experience levels to pitch and profit from their hypercasual game ideas. Bake It was pitched in February 2020, and went into development soon after gaining the support of the wider Kwalee team.

Bake It joins Draw It (80 million+ downloads), Jetpack Jump (38 million+), Shootout 3D (31 million+) and many more on the growing list of hit games that began their lives as pitches on Creative Wednesdays.

“That we’ve already reached 10 million downloads with Bake It is a source of great pride – especially given the circumstances under which we released it,” said David Darling, CEO of Kwalee.

“Right from the first pitch, Bake It stood out as a game with great potential and we can’t wait to make good on that promise by celebrating many more download milestones for the game. The first successful remote release also gives us real confidence for the many games we’ve currently got in the works. It shouldn’t be long before we’re repeating this success with more remotely developed and published games!”

As well as developing its own games, Kwalee also continues to work with external developers around the world to publish hit hypercasual games and is actively seeking more mobile game developers to partner with.
